The Pittsburgh Tuba Project is an all-tuba quartet that primarily performs custom arrangements. The group members are John DiCesare, Tom Lukowicz, Brian McBride, and Tyler Schwirian. The quartet has performed concerts at the 2014 International Tuba Euphonium Conference, the 2015 and 2013 Midwest Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference, Heinz Hall for the Pittsburgh Symphony, Wright State University, Carnegie Mellon University, Michigan State University, and Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts.
The group uses various combinations of tubas that include 2 Gronitz PCKs, 2 Meinl Weston 6450, 2 Meinl Weston 2250s, a Willson 3200, and a Meinl Weston 6460. The group believes that changing instruments allows us to pick the exact tonal color that is appropriate for each piece, whether a lighter vocal piece or a powerful rendition of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor.
